My Bouquet…

(Frangipani Heart Bouquet from D-Vine Flowers; Roses & ivory lisianthus from Brides In Bloom; Magneta Inspired Bouquet from Chanele Rose Flowers; Cymbidium Orchids by Wedding Flowers by Renee)

Choosing your wedding bouquet can be overwhelming. Choosing your bouquet and all your other flower arrangements for your wedding can be downright stressful.  Do you go for one colour or a variety? Should you choose a small bouquet for yourself or one that hangs or drapes? What sort of bouquets should your bridesmaids have? Should your bouquet match your wedding colours? Should they match the rest of the flower arrangements at your ceremony and reception? Do the arrangements suit your body type. More importantly, do they suit your dress? Should you get flowers that you love or ones that are in season? The list of questions can go on and on…

Here are our 5 top tips to get you started in the right direction:

1. Don’t forget to budget.

You’d be surprised how often brides forget to set aside a budget for their flower arrangements, including the bouquet. Think about the places and people that will need flowers on the big day–YOU, your bridesmaids, flower girls, the groomsmen and groom, the ceremony location, the reception. Also, think about whether or not you’re going to use your bouquet for the bridal toss (if you choose to do one) or have one made specifically for the event.

2. Shop Around

There are a lot of great florists out there that can cater especially for bridal bouquets and wedding flowers. There are also a lot of not-so-great ones that will end up overcharging you, devaluing your vision and leave you feeling more stressed than you were to begin with. Shop around. Talk to different florists. Visit their stores. Check out their selections. Get a feel of what kind of services they offer and whether or not they suit you and your budget.

3. Visualise and Communicate

While some brides might already have an idea of what kind of flowers they want, other brides might not. And that’s totally okay. You don’t need to know exactly what kind of flowers you want in what arrangement, but you should be able to give your florist some idea through the kind of style/mood you’re after, what kind of overall look you prefer, what your dress and your bridesmaids dresses will be like or even what the theme or colour scheme is for your wedding. Before sitting down and discussing the details with your florist, it might be an idea to jot down some notes, bookmark or print out a couple of flower arrangements pictures you come across online or in wedding magazines, and if possible, perhaps provide a picture or description of your wedding dress as well (if you’ve already chosen one at that point).

4. Learn to compromise (and trust your florist)

While it’s great to know what you want, also be prepared to listen to your florists’ opinion and be willing to compromise if you find  yourself in a situation where your flowers of choice are unavailable due to budget, style, location or seasonal restrictions.Trust that your florist has taken into consideration everything you’ve told them about what you want and your overall vision for your dream bouquet, and trust that despite any restrictions, your florist will be able to create something that will reflect and enhance your dream wedding. They are the flower experts after all.

5. Don’t leave it to the last minute to choose and book your flowers.

This might seem silly, but often couples will go through a list of vendors that they need to book and arrange, and more often than not, florists end up falling somewhere towards the bottom of that list. Remember, when you’re rushed for time, you’ll end up making hasty decisions that could end up jeopardising not only your budget but also the quality of the product you’re going to end up with on the big day.

For all you lovely ladies out there who have already gone through the process of selecting your wedding bouquet and flower arrangements, what advice would you give to other brides out there?

Video Of The Week…Indian Wedding Feature Film

(via Pacific Pictures on Vimeo)

This week’s video is a play on reality and make-believe.

This 28-minute film by Pacific Pictures juggles the fine line between what is scripted and what is not. It’s a wonderful film that takes you through the breathtaking landscape of India, the colourful traditions of the people and culture, and the vibrancy that encapsulates so many of us as we prepare to celebrate in such a happy, blessed occasion.

We hope you like watching this as much as we did. It’s an amazing piece of work and the talented team at Pacific Pictures should be applauded for the way in which they manage to seamlessly weave a real-life event (Melissa & Samir’s wedding) and a scripted story (of a young girl wanting to present the bride with a gift) together.

Enjoy!

Food Stations: A Fun Buffet Alternative At Your Wedding…

(via Flavours Catering + Events, Sydney)

Food is definitely one of the most important aspects to deliberate on when planning your wedding. For most couples, most of their wedding budget will go towards catering for theirs and their guests’ palates. Choosing the right kind of food to serve at your reception, therefore, can be a stressful task once you consider your taste, your partner’s taste, your families’ and relatives’ tastes as well as the rest of your guests’.

(via Fred & Ginger Catering, Melbourne)

A trend in recent years has been the growing popularity of food stations at wedding receptions. These are a fun–and a more sophisticated–take on the standard buffet table (and you’d be surprised how many brides baulk at the mere mention of ‘buffet’), a non-traditional choice from the sit-down reception, and ensures that all your guests’ tastes are well catered for.

(via Spit Roast Catering, Sunshine Coast)

The main difference between stations and a buffet is that instead of having just simply one or two tables where your guests line up to gather their food, several small to large tables are set up, usually around the sides of the reception room so that guests are able to move around, move from different tables–or stations–and pick and choose their food as they wish.

Another difference is that while buffet meals are usually associated with lower prices, food stations can actually run as high, if not higher, than the traditional sit-down menus. This is because most couples usually end up selecting a wider variety of dishes to serve–wanting to make sure that their guests enjoy their meals as much as possible–and, in some cases, couples may also request specific dishes that might not normally be available at a sit-down reception.

Which brings us to one of the other great points about choosing food stations: themes.

If you have a particular theme for your wedding, it’s very easy to continue running this through to your selected dishes for the reception. For example, if your theme is ‘travel’, you could arrange to have each food station to represent a different country, with food choices from that particular place. Or, if your theme is ‘Carnival’, you could choose to provide one, two or more stations simply dedicated to carnival-related food.

Alternatively, to cut costs on wedding favors for your guests, you could simply provide a lovely dessert station where they can pick and choose mini-desserts to plate up or take home. The possibilities are endless!

Food stations also aren’t necessarily just for big weddings either. If you’re having a small wedding, the menus and styles are easily adapted. You may probably end up putting more of your budget towards the food selection if your guest list is smaller. And let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy having more food to eat at an event?

However you choose to personalise it, food stations are definitely a fun and interesting way to cater to everyone’s taste buds, provide you and your guests with more than enough to eat after a long and exciting day (where you’ve probably eaten very little!) and give everyone a chance to get up,  mingle and get to know each other during the reception.

Happy Planning!

For Chocolate Lovers…

Valentine’s Day is only a week away and if you’re stuck on last minute gift-ideas handmade chocolates can never go wrong (unless, of course, they or you are allergic to chocolate…in which case, you should probably skip this post).

First off, you’re going to need the following items:

Chocolate Moulds: I used silicone ones because I find it easier to remove the chocolates from later on, but if you don’t have one or can’t get hold of one from somewhere, another alternative would be to use miniature cupcake liners or plastic moulds.

Fillings: I went with rice crispy cereal for my milk chocolate and Nutella for my white chocolate but you, of course, could choose any kind of filling you desire. You’re only as limited as your imagine…and tastebud.

You also need:

Your choice of chocolate (milk, dark, white–just make sure it’s good quality otherwise it could end up leaving a bad taste in your mouth)

Double-Boiler (or a microwave)

So, Step 1: Break your chocolate up into small pieces and melt over your double-boiler. If you’re using a microwave, make sure you keep a close eye on the chocolate as it could end up burning if left to melt for too long.

Step 2: Pour a small amount of the melted chocolate into the mould, just enough to form the base.

Step 3: Drop in your fillings.

Step 4: Mix the chocolate and the fillings up with a small spoon or a wooden skewer to make sure it’s evenly distributed.

Step 5: Fill up the remaining part of the mould (and you can mix the ingredients again for good measure if you want).

Step 6: Leave to set.

Don’t worry if it looks messy. Just make sure that the tops of the chocolate are more or less even and once it’s set and out of the moulds, you can clean the sides up a little more.

These are what they should look like once they have set and have been taken out of the moulds.

And I used a different set of moulds to make my white chocolate rounds with a soft Nutella centre…

The great thing about making your own chocolate at home is that you can experiment with them as much as you want. There’s no limit to what kind of flavour combinations you could come up with! You could serve these up as an after-dinner surprise for your valentine or box them up nicely and give them as a sweet gift.

The choices are all up to you!
